The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) slams a fine
of 3050 crores on India’s top three telecom operators which are Bharti Airtel, Vodafone
India and Idea cellular.
TRAI imposed fine of 50 crores per circle where 21 circles
have been recommended for Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India and 19 circles for
Idea cellular. This fine is imposed for all of these three companies for
failure of providing the sufficient interconnection to Reliance JIO. TRAI
imposed the fine of 1050 crore on Bharti Airtel and also 1050 crore on Vodafone
India and 950 crores on Idea cellular. Since TRAI does not have power to impose
fine, it suggests The Department of Telecommunication to impose this fine on all
of these telecom companies. JIO users have been facing congestion on voice
calls and call drops problem. And the company said that this is because the
other telecom operator’s companies were not providing the interconnectivity or
so-called point of interconnection so that calls could end in their networks. So
TRAI found the violations were against the public interest and warranted the
cancellation of all these three companies. TRAI has been monitoring this high-level
congestion on a daily basis since September 30 and found that the situation has
not improved.
